Avoiding Overuse Injuries

Whether you’re an athlete, someone with a very physical job, or just trying to take good care of your body, keeping your muscles strong and flexible is one of the best things you can do to prevent back injuries. But you don’t want to subject yourself to the wear and tear of overuse. At the Catalina Medical center in Redondo Beach, we offer physical therapy services, and we want to pass along some advice on how to avoid overextending yourself.

Overuse injuries don’t just happen to athletes who push themselves every day. A person who only exercises on the weekends could fray muscle fibers if they extend a work-out for too long. For this reason, we encourage people to work out for about half an hour every day, including time for warm-ups and cool-downs. It’s wise to consult with a professional about what routines to do, but a general rule is to work out different body parts on different days to give them time to recover. As you become stronger, you can increase your activity, but you shouldn’t try to increase by more than ten percent per week. You’ll also need to ensure that all your equipment is in good condition, including your shoes, which you will depend on to absorb shocks that would otherwise impact the spine. Runners need to replace their shoes every few months. If you develop persistent pain, feel free to see us, and we’ll come up with a way to help you stay active while you heal.
